Handyman Proposal Template

The short answer

A handyman proposal that gets signed turns the punch list into one line per task, each with a flat price, and makes the tasks the customer is unsure about optional so they can accept part of the list without another visit. For every line, say whether materials are included, carried as an allowance, or supplied by the customer, and that labor stays the same when they buy their own parts. Write down what you do not do: work needing an electrical or plumbing license, gas, or structural changes. Add a rule for tasks added on site: they are priced and agreed before you start them. Small jobs are paid in full on completion, but a list heavy on materials, like a vanity or a run of doors, can take a deposit that covers the purchase. Include your minimum, a return-trip charge for missing parts, and whether you haul away debris.

A handyman proposal is a priced scope of work with a signature line. Start from this template, or let the AI draft one from a plain-English description of the job, mark the add-ons optional, and send a link the customer accepts on their phone. The invoice, and the deposit invoice if you set one, are created the moment they accept.

What belongs in a handyman proposal

Handyman proposals bundle a punch list into one priced document. Each task gets its own line with a time or flat price so the customer can prioritise, and the ones they are on the fence about become optional items. Materials are either included in the line or listed as an allowance. Say what you do not do (licensed electrical and plumbing, structural work) and how you handle tasks that run long, because punch lists always grow while you are on site.

What a handyman proposal should spell out

Most disputes on handyman jobs trace back to something the proposal left vague. Write each of these down before the customer signs.

Terms that belong in a handyman proposal

Prices are flat per task listed; tasks added on site are quoted before starting. Customer-supplied materials must be on site at the start; missing parts are billed as a return trip. We do not perform work that requires an electrical or plumbing license.

Promise extended coverage on the bid: a longer warranty on labor is often what wins handyman work against a cheaper number, and it costs nothing on the day you offer it. Set the terms on the proposal and they print with the scope the customer accepts, carry through to the invoice, and start counting down when that invoice is paid. From there warranty tracking keeps the coverage dates, an estimate of the labor and parts you could still owe, and any callback filed against the job.

Jobs change once the work starts. When handyman work grows or shrinks after the customer has signed, send a change order: they approve the added or credited work and the new total on their phone, and the unpaid balance invoice updates itself.

How the proposal gets accepted

Send the link. The customer sees the scope, ticks the optional items they want and watches the total update, types their name, agrees to the terms, and accepts. The acceptance is recorded with the timestamp, IP address, browser, and a hash of the content. The invoice is generated from exactly what they selected, with the deposit invoiced first when you set one.

Frequently asked questions

How should a handyman price a punch list?

One line per task with a flat price. Hourly totals feel open-ended to customers; flat task prices let them cut the list to a budget and let you add optional items they might say yes to.

Can a handyman proposal include optional tasks?

Yes, and it should. The deck reseal or the closet install the customer is unsure about goes in as an optional line they can tick when accepting, so you never have to re-quote.

Should a handyman proposal take a deposit?

For small task lists paid on the day, no; collect in full when the work is done. When the list needs you to buy materials in advance, such as a vanity, several prehung doors or a pallet of decking, take a deposit that covers that purchase when the customer accepts, and show it as its own line.

What happens when the customer adds tasks while I am on site?

Price each new task before you touch it and get a yes in writing, even a text, then add it to the invoice as its own line. If the additions will not fit in the day, say which ones move to another visit. The proposal's terms should already say this so nobody is surprised.

How do I handle materials the customer supplies?

Write the part down by name on the proposal, say it must be on site before you arrive, and note that the warranty on it belongs to the customer. Your labor price stays the same. If it is missing, wrong or damaged, the proposal should state the return-trip charge.

Can customers accept this proposal online?

Yes. Send the link, and the customer ticks the optional items they want, types their name, and accepts on any device. The acceptance is recorded with the time, IP address, and a hash of the content, and a signed PDF is produced. See how e-signature works on Numulo.
